make your own opinion
I was raised in a sheep culture, where listening to others was preferred over forming your own opinion on things.
Sheep culture made me avoid alcohol like the plague until I was 27. I listened to all the stories that were preached in church by ex-alcoholics. I chimed in with the rest of the church in a big amen, very content with my opinion on alcohol being confirmed and dictated by some random speaker.
Not forming your own opinion in key life questions is, if you squint a little, the basis of democratic parties. If I dug in on the details of each politically dividing question, there would be exactly 0 parties matching my views. Thus I give up on my own beliefs and opinions to join the herd of a party.
When I talk with peers about using chatgpt for therapy, they laugh and tell war stories they read online: chatgpt is wrong 53% of the time on facts, people get married to chatgpt, it always replies in a way so you'll feel great, etc. People often don’t have own experiences.
Writing kubectl commands and yaml files was not fun, but after that hard work I saw that kubernetes doesn’t have to be only overengineering. Without the experience, it is pretty much impossible to have a reasonable clear opinion.
Listening to the group is often a wise first step. But I found that when my opinions are not intrinsically my own, I'll have zero ground when questioned for what I really stand for. Without a clear opinion, I mumble around and weigh both sides of the question, never really landing in something. It's an horrible experience, don’t do it.
